Checks and balances: a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power Separation of powers: the doctrine under which the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government are not to infringe upon each other's constitutionally vested powers Elastic Clause: a statement in the U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 8) granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the enumerated list of powers.
